Can Dogs Eat Apples?

Can Dogs Eat Apples?

Can Dogs Eat Apples? After all, dogs are pretty finicky when it comes to fruits and veggies, so you need to know that your canine friend won’t suddenly become ill after ingesting one of these crunchy treats.

And while it might seem like the apple would just pass through your dog’s system harmlessly, even if he ate the core or seeds, you never want to tempt fate when it comes to your dog’s health, especially when there are certain fruits that could be potentially poisonous to him.

Are Apples Good For Dogs?

Apples are safe for dogs to eat in moderation. Apples are a high water content fruit and provide fiber which is important for good digestion. Apple seeds contain cyanide, which can be toxic to both humans and animals if ingested in large quantities.

However, the amount of cyanide from apple seeds is not enough to harm your dog. The seeds should be removed before feeding to your dog.

You may also give them a small slice of apple with the seed on it as an occasional treat.  Consult your vet before feeding these foods to your pet.

How Many Apples Can Dogs Eat?

Apples can be a great addition to your dog’s diet, but it is important not to overdo it. Too many apples could give your dog diarrhea or cause an upset stomach. The general rule for feeding fruit to your dog is 1/4 cup per day.

It would also be best if you gave the apple as a treat rather than using them as part of their regular meal. Apples are one of the most beneficial fruits for dogs because they contain potassium which promotes cardiovascular health and helps maintain good digestion and kidney function in pets.

If you’re going to use apples as treats for your pet then consider coating them in peanut butter or plain yogurt instead of adding too much sugar.

How To Safely Prepare Apples For Dogs

Apples are a healthy snack that can be offered to your dog as an occasional treat. However, before offering them to your dog, it is important that you understand how to safely prepare and store them.

First, wash the apple thoroughly with water. Next to no dirt will get washed off during this process, but most bacteria will be removed.

Next, remove the skin from the apple and discard it. Next, cut out any seeds or stem from the middle of the apple. Finally, slice up the apples into pieces that are small enough for your pup to consume without choking on them.

These slices can then be stored in a refrigerator for about two weeks or in a sealed container in the freezer for about three months.

Just make sure not to freeze the whole apple because that will turn it rock hard! When giving your pup an apple, make sure they’re sitting down so they don’t choke on it. Otherwise, have fun watching them crunch away on their favorite snack!

Can Dogs Eat Applesauce?

Apples are a great source of vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants. Applesauce is made from mashed up or pureed raw apples. A dog can safely eat some applesauce if it doesn’t contain any added sugar or salt.

However, apple seeds contain cyanide which is poisonous to both humans and animals; so the safest way to share your apple with your dog is to slice it into small pieces and feed him/her one small piece at a time.

The best way for you to know how much apple juice you should give your dog is by following this equation:

Dogs Weight in Pounds X .03 =

Number of Ounces of Apple Juice per Day

It’s best not to mix fruit juices together when giving them to your pet as they may cause an upset stomach.

How To Feed Apples To Dogs

Apples are not toxic to dogs, but they are high in sugar. Feeding your dog an apple every now and then won’t harm them, but it is important to keep their diet balanced.

  • Only feed them one apple per day. -If they are a small breed like a Chihuahua, limit it to half of an apple per day.
  •  If they are a medium breed like a Labrador retriever, give them one whole apple per day.
  • Large breeds can have up to two whole apples per day.
  • This doesn’t include any other fruit or vegetables you might be giving them as well; this just refers to the number of servings from the apple tree.

For example, if you feed your Lab three apples today and tomorrow another four apples, that would make for five total servings from the apple tree.

The Lab would need to wait at least 3-4 days before having another serving from the apple tree so their body has time to metabolize all of the sugar in those apples.

However, Golden Delicious’ are better suited for smaller breeds because they contain less sugar and cause less upset stomachs.

Whatever variety you choose, remember that too many sweets can lead to weight gain and even tooth decay if left unchecked!

Can Dogs Eat Raw Apples?

Dogs can eat raw apples, but it’s always a good idea to check with your vet first. If you’re not sure if an ingredient is safe for your dog to consume, consult the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center or the Pet Poison Hotline.

You can find their phone numbers on any of these sites.

You should always make sure that you cut up fruits and vegetables before giving them to your dog. This will help prevent choking and the build-up of bacteria in the mouth or stomach.

Additionally, fruits and veggies are more nutritious when they are uncooked because cooking removes some of the nutrients.

If you want to give your dog cooked fruit or veggies (or anything else), make sure that it doesn’t have salt or spices added to it because those could be toxic for your dog.

Additionally, never give your dog alcohol as this can cause vomiting, diarrhea, decreased coordination and even coma. And lastly, grapes are toxic to dogs so never give them those either!
